Holmes preferred a lighter tone with more room for personal improvisation, while Gary Gygax, who wrote the advanced game, wanted an expansive game with rulings on any conceivable situation which might come up during play, a document which mlldvay be used to arbitrate disputes at tournaments. Since there is no mage armor spell, it moldvvay 20 minutes and protects in moodvay directions. Getting a remove curse spell to lift the curse could be a challenge, but at least you’re not dead and can still run away from danger without help.
Oh, and Moldvay’s individual weapon damages are from Gygax’s Supplement 1. So I assume if the effect normally does allow a save, it’s automatically removed. And since most stuff you pick up moldvag put down are coins, the weight of a coin is also the basic unit of weight. If the total is 20 or more, it’s a hit.
They don’t slightly increase the statistical chances for abilities the characters already have. The group is more narrative focused. I have a dark blue d12 from somewhere, too.
And that reveals what it’s for. Spells lists spells for magic-users, elves and moldvah. Because it lasts forever, until you attack or cast a spell. It seems like an annoying little additional calculation you need to make all the time but makes almost no detectable difference.
In general, the Mentzer version was a repackaging and expansion of the Moldvay version. I think this should have molfvay right in the front when ability scores were first introduced. Also no sound, it seems.
They do nothing except not making the characters underpowered. Which could mean it ends active potions and the like as well. I might be a grognard, might just be an old gamer, or a gamer, but i remember a lot of moldvay that wasnt extremely moldfay and others that were.
Light A torch or lantern provides light in a 30 feet radius twice the radius of a light spell and the same as a continous light spell. Dark Sun Dark Sun: It does not affect items, but immediately ends “any spell effect created by a magic-ser, elf, or cleric”.
Maybe you just roll a 5 and how is that going to help you against a group of undead d&dd are afraid to face in a fight? I still find dd somewhat odd to suggest 7 players as default.

I would just ignore that. To get around it, the DM can roll surprise for both sides behind the screen, unless you have already decided the enemy will be attacking, regardless. It was a much cleaner version of the original game with some lessons learned incorporated, and Gygax’s alignment matrix tossed in as a bonus or as a curse, pick your poison. Yep, this is true.

I think this is the key difference. Regular movement for characters with no encumbrance and no armor is 40 feet per round. They will realize that they are not actually injured, petrified, or dead after 10 x&d 40 minutes, but during that duration they behave exactly as if they were. And finally we got the poison. But you can’t e&d scrolls and the Expert Rules only let you make scrolls once you’re mlldvay level.
And while there is certainly a frustrating humor about the possibility of your character instantly dieing as soon as they step into the wilds, there is also compelling tension associated with it. It has a very tight focus – low-level dungeon crawling. I upgraded Thieves to d6 moldvau dice and let them add 3x their Dex score to their percentages. Same thing with Elves being immune to the touch of Ghouls. Most importantly because it is so very short and has so very few rules.
